Vistadome Train to Machu Picchu: Vistadome, Vistadome Observatory and The 360° (2026)

The train ride to Machu Picchu Pueblo runs through the Sacred Valley and the Urubamba River canyon, which is why many travelers choose a panoramic train. There are three options today: PeruRail's Vistadome and Vistadome Observatory, and Inca Rail's The 360°. In this guide we explain what each one includes, which stations they leave from, their schedules, the luggage allowance and whether they are worth paying more than Expedition or The Voyager. We use the official pages of PeruRail and Inca Rail, and when a figure comes from an agency or we could not verify it, we say so.

All these trains arrive in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), not at the citadel, and none of them includes the Machu Picchu entry ticket.

What a panoramic train is

It is a train with larger-than-usual windows for watching the scenery during the trip. On the Vistadome, there are windows in the roof as well. The Vistadome Observatory and The 360° add an observation car with an open-air space, so you can see the mountains without glass in between. All three also include a snack and some cultural activity on board, which the cheapest classes do not have.

Panoramic trains: quick comparison

Neither company publishes a fixed fare on its information pages: the price depends on the date, the departure time and demand, and you see it in their booking engine.

PeruRail Vistadome

• Views: panoramic windows on the sides and in the roof. PeruRail states that all its Vistadome trains have panoramic windows.
• Included: a snack with Andean ingredients, background music and an audio tour about the places along the route. There are no vegetarian snacks.
• On the return: on trips from Machu Picchu Pueblo there is a live cultural show, with Andean music and dances, and a fashion show of baby alpaca garments that you can buy on board.
• Stop at Huaypo Lake: only on daytime bimodal departures and if the weather allows.
• Duration: 1 h 30 min to 2 h from Ollantaytambo, and about 4 h from Cusco on the bimodal service.
• Children: those aged 3 to 11 pay 75% of the fare, and infants aged 0 to 2 travel free if they sit on a parent's lap.

The Vistadome page mentions five departure stations: Wanchaq, San Pedro, Poroy, Ollantaytambo and Urubamba. However, in the May to December 2026 timetable the only departure from Urubamba is a Vistadome Observatory.

PeruRail Vistadome Observatory

• Observation car: the train has a panoramic car, an observation car with an open-air balcony and a bar car. PeruRail presents it as its premium panoramic class.
• Included: snacks and drinks, live Andean music and dances, an audio tour and roomy seats with a table.
• Alpaca fashion show: only on trips from Machu Picchu to Cusco.
• Stop at Huaypo Lake: as on the Vistadome, only on some daytime bimodal departures and depending on the weather.
• Duration: about 1 h 30 min from Ollantaytambo and 4 to 5 h from Cusco, by bus and train.

According to the May to December 2026 timetable, it leaves from Ollantaytambo, from Cusco (San Pedro and Poroy) and from Urubamba.

Inca Rail The 360°

• Views: panoramic windows with UV protection and an open-air observation car. Inca Rail says you can step out onto this car especially when the train is moving slowly or stopped, holding on to the railings.
• Included: complimentary Andean snacks, a digital system that shows the route in real time and Wi-Fi when conditions allow.
• Shows: live Andean music, usually on the return trip, and a staging of the Ollantay drama, exclusive to the outbound trip from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.
• Stations: it leaves from Ollantaytambo, about 1 h 30 min to 2 h from Cusco by road. If you start in Cusco, you can buy the bimodal service, with a bus to Ollantaytambo.

Compared with the Vistadome, The 360° has the advantage of the open-air space; compared with the Vistadome Observatory, it leaves only from Ollantaytambo. According to Inca Rail, it is a very popular choice among first-time visitors to Machu Picchu.

Panoramic train schedules

PeruRail, Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo (May to December 2026):

• Vistadome: 7:05 (arrives 8:27), 8:00 (9:25), 8:53 (10:29), 9:15 (10:52), 12:55 (14:25) and 19:04 (20:45).
• Vistadome Observatory: 7:45 (arrives 9:15), 8:29 (9:54), 10:32 (12:11), 13:27 (14:50) and 15:37 (17:02).

PeruRail, from Cusco and Urubamba:

• Vistadome: from San Pedro at 6:40 and from Poroy at 7:35; it arrives at 10:52.
• Vistadome Observatory: from Poroy at 6:40 (arrives 9:54), from San Pedro at 7:30 and from Poroy at 8:25 (both arrive 12:11), and from Urubamba at 6:06 (arrives 9:15).

PeruRail, return from Machu Picchu Pueblo:

• Vistadome to Ollantaytambo: 12:46, 14:55, 15:48, 16:43, 18:10, 18:20 and 21:50; the last one arrives at 23:37.
• Vistadome Observatory to Ollantaytambo: 10:55, 13:37, 15:20, 16:22 and 17:23; the last one arrives at 19:02.
• To Cusco: the 16:43 Vistadome arrives in Poroy at 20:23 and in San Pedro at 21:23; the 17:23 Vistadome Observatory arrives in Poroy at 20:52 and in San Pedro at 21:52.

Several of these departures also carry Expedition cars. From January to April there are no trains from the Cusco stations: departures from Cusco are bimodal, with a bus from Wanchaq.

Inca Rail: its schedule page uses the booking engine, and we could not extract the full timetable of The 360°. Its promotions page lists a departure from Ollantaytambo at 7:22. Always check the times when booking, because they can change for operational reasons.

Which side should you sit on?

We found no official recommendation on which side of the train has the best views. Besides, neither company lets you choose your seat: PeruRail says its sales system does not allow it, and Inca Rail says seats are assigned automatically at purchase. Blogs give tips about the left or right side, but we could not verify them. If it worries you, the Vistadome's panoramic roof and the observation cars of the Vistadome Observatory and The 360° let you see both sides.

Is it worth it compared with Expedition or The Voyager?

• Expedition (PeruRail): it has large windows, but none in the roof, and it is the class with the most departures; no food is included. About USD 63–99 per leg from Ollantaytambo (agencies, unverified).
• The Voyager (Inca Rail): a car with large windows, background music and snacks for sale, with no open-air space. About USD 62–89 per leg (agencies, unverified).

The scenery is the same in every class, because all trains run on the same track. What you pay extra for on a panoramic train is the view through the roof or in the open air, the snack and the shows. If you travel by day and the train is part of your experience, it is usually worth it; if you travel at night or just want to get there, Expedition or The Voyager do the job just as well.

Which train to choose for your trip

• If you want the lowest price: Expedition or The Voyager.
• If you want views without spending as much: Vistadome, with roof windows and a snack included.
• If you want to take photos in the open air: Vistadome Observatory or The 360°.
• If you leave from Cusco between May and December: Vistadome or Vistadome Observatory from San Pedro or Poroy, without changing transport.
• If your hotel is in the Sacred Valley: any of the three from Ollantaytambo, or the Vistadome Observatory from Urubamba.
• If you want to see the shows: choose the panoramic train for the return, when there are more activities; The 360°'s Ollantay drama is only on the way out.
