Buying Machu Picchu Tickets in Person in Aguas Calientes (2026): Where, Hours, Quotas and Tips

If you couldn't get a ticket online, you still have one official option: the Ministry of Culture ticket office in Machupicchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), which sells up to 1,000 tickets a day for entry to the llaqta (the Inca city) the following day. You buy in person, with your original ID, on a first-come, first-served basis until the tickets run out. In 2026 a foreign adult pays the same as online: S/163 for a standard route and S/211 for a mountain route, SERNANP fee included. Keep in mind that these tickets don't cover every route: according to the 2026 capacity annex, only six of the ten routes are sold in person, and most of the quota is for Circuit 2. In this guide we explain where the ticket office is, what opening hours the ministry publishes (and why they don't match), how the queue works, what to bring, how much it costs and what to do if tickets have sold out.

The essentials in 30 seconds

Where to buy: the Centro Cultural de Machupicchu Pueblo

In-person sales take place at the DDC Cusco ticket office in Machupicchu Pueblo, which the Ministry of Culture refers to as the Centro Cultural de Machupicchu Pueblo (its contact page lists it as "Centro Cultural – Aguas Calientes"). It is the only place in Aguas Calientes where these 1,000 daily tickets are sold. Tickets are not sold at the entrance to the llaqta.

Address: the Ministry of Culture does not publish an exact street address. Travel guides and tour operators agree that it is on Avenida Pachacútec, block 1, near the town's main square, but we have not been able to confirm this in an official source. When you arrive, ask at your hotel or any local for the "Centro Cultural" or the "boletería del Ministerio de Cultura": in such a small town, everyone knows where it is.

Under the protocol the ministry has applied since August 1, 2025, service is provided at 5 windows at the same time, one of them for priority service, and a screen shows in real time how many tickets have been sold. DDC Cusco staff keep the queue informed about how many tickets are left.

Sales hours: what the official sources say

Tread carefully here, because the Ministry of Culture's own sources don't say the same thing:

• The official website machupicchu.gob.pe, on its contact page, lists opening hours for the Centro Cultural in Aguas Calientes of Monday to Sunday, 15:00 to 22:00.
• The protocol published on gob.pe in July 2025, in force since August 1, 2025, says the 1,000 tickets are sold Monday to Sunday, 6:00 to 22:00, or until the available tickets run out.
• The Peruvian press has published other hours in 2026. For example, Infobae reported in August 2026 that the office was open from 6:00 to 20:45, with tickets for the following day on sale from 14:00. We have not been able to confirm this in an official source.

Our practical advice: plan as if sales for the next day could start as early as 6:00, and confirm the hours when you arrive in Aguas Calientes, at your hotel or at the ticket office itself. In high season, tickets can sell out long before closing time.

How many tickets are sold and for which routes

The Ministry of Culture sells up to 1,000 tickets a day in person. These tickets are part of the day's total capacity, not on top of it: in 2026, the llaqta's capacity is 5,600 visitors a day in high season and 4,500 in low season (RM 000285-2025-MC).

The annex to that resolution for high season splits the in-person quota as follows:

Three practical takeaways:

• Circuit 2 accounts for 700 of the 1,000 tickets, and Route 2-A alone for 600. If you buy in person, you will most likely leave with a Circuit 2 ticket. If you can't decide between the two routes, see our 2-A vs 2-B comparison.
• The mountains have very few in-person tickets: 50 for Machupicchu Mountain and 50 for Huayna Picchu for the whole day. They are the first to sell out. More on Huayna Picchu in our Circuit 3 guide.
• Routes 1-C (Intipunku Gate), 1-D (Inca Bridge), 3-C (Great Cavern) and 3-D (Huchuy Picchu) have no in-person quota in the annex: they are sold online only.

In low season, the in-person total is still up to 1,000 tickets, but we have not been able to consult the breakdown by route and time slot for those dates. Check real availability before you go. All the routes are explained in our Machu Picchu circuits guide.

The next-day rule (and the 2026 exceptions)

The official rule is clear: a ticket bought in person lets you enter the llaqta the day after the purchase. In practice, this means you need to spend at least one night in Aguas Calientes: you arrive, buy your ticket and visit Machu Picchu the next day.

There were exceptions in 2026. In May, DDC Cusco enabled advance in-person sales "on an exceptional basis", allowing people to buy up to three days ahead, subject to availability for each date, and according to the press this was applied again during the July high season, around the Fiestas Patrias national holidays. These were temporary measures in response to demand peaks, not the general rule, so don't count on them: ask at the ticket office whether any such measure is in force when you arrive.

How the queue works

• First come, first served. Tickets are sold in order of arrival until they run out.
• No numbered slips or pre-tickets. The 2025 protocol prohibits handing out tickets or pre-tickets before the purchase process. Be wary of anyone who offers to "hold your place" or sell you a number.
• You choose when you reach the window. The circuit, route and time slot depend on what is left when your turn comes. Have a plan B in mind (for example, 2-A if there is no 2-B, or another time slot).
• Non-transferable tickets. They are issued in the visitor's name and cannot be resold or given to someone else.
• Personal purchase. The Ministry of Culture states that tickets must be bought personally and in person. The safest approach is for each traveler to join the queue with their own original ID.

What documents to bring

The visitor regulations, as amended by RM 000334-2026-MC, require you to show the original document both to buy and to enter:

• Foreign visitors: valid passport, foreign resident card (carné de extranjería) or diplomatic ID. Citizens of the Andean Community and MERCOSUR can use their national ID card.
• Peruvians: original DNI.
• Students: valid university or institute student card, in the original, as well as your ID.

If your document was lost or stolen: the regulations accept the corresponding police report.

Bring the same document on the day of your visit: staff check the ticket against your ID at the entrance and may ask for it inside the llaqta.

Payment methods

The Ministry of Culture protocol states that in-person tickets can be paid by POS (card) or in cash. Even so, bring enough soles in cash for your whole group in case the card terminal or the connection fails: it's not unusual in a mountain town.

Prices in 2026

Prices are the same as on tuboleto.cultura.pe. Since May 1, 2026, the SERNANP fee for entry to the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu (S/11 for foreign visitors) is added.

Peruvians, residents and citizens of the Andean Community have reduced rates. We have not been able to confirm in an official source how the SERNANP fee is charged at the in-person window or the exact amount for foreign minors, so check the total before paying. What time should you queue?

The ministry gives no official recommendation, but everything points the same way: the earlier, the better.

• In high season, the press has reported queues lasting several hours, and even people spending the night waiting, and the 1,000 tickets can sell out quickly. On May 7, 2026, for example, DDC Cusco reported that all in-person tickets for that day had already been sold.
• Arrive before the opening time you are given in town, especially if you want a mountain (only 50 in-person tickets each in high season) or an early time slot.
• Check the counter before you leave your hotel. At tuboleto.cultura.pe/disponibilidad/llaqta_machupicchu you can see the status of the 1,000-ticket sale in real time.
• In low season, there is usually less pressure, but there are also days when tickets sell out. Don't leave it until the last hour.

High season and low season

For 2026, RM 000285-2025-MC sets high season as January 1, April 2 to 5, June 19 to November 2, and December 30 and 31. The rest of the year is low season.

• High season: capacity of 5,600 visitors a day and all routes open, although the four seasonal routes have no in-person quota. Demand in Aguas Calientes peaks, queues are long and mountain tickets fly.
• Low season: capacity of 4,500 visitors a day and no routes 1-C, 1-D, 3-C or 3-D. In-person sales continue, but we have not been able to confirm how the 1,000 tickets are split by route on these dates.

For the rest of 2026, high season ends on November 2 and returns on December 30 and 31.

If tickets sell out: alternatives

• Check tuboleto.cultura.pe. Online sales are separate from in-person sales, and sometimes there are tickets left on other routes or time slots, even for dates close by.
• Stay one more day. If today's tickets have sold out, sales for the following day open again the next day. This is the most common plan B, but it means another night in a hotel and possibly changing your train.
• Accept another route or time slot. At the window, prioritize getting a ticket over a specific route: 2-A has many more in-person tickets than any other.
• Ask in Cusco before you travel. The regulations allow in-person purchases at DDC Cusco's authorized offices, and machupicchu.gob.pe lists, in Cusco city, the Oficina de Recaudación at Casa Garcilaso (Calle Garcilaso s/n), Monday to Saturday, 7:00 to 19:00. Check there whether they can sell you a ticket for the date you want.
• Authorized agencies. The regulations allow travel and tourism agencies registered with DDC Cusco to buy tickets. Make sure the ticket is issued in your name and is for the route you want.

Risks and tips

• Resellers and pre-tickets. The ticket is issued in your name and is non-transferable, and the protocol prohibits pre-tickets. Anyone selling you a place in the queue or a ticket in someone else's name is scamming you.
• Don't make it your plan A in high season. If you only have one day in Aguas Calientes, buy online in advance. In-person sales are a good plan B, not a guarantee.
• Plan your train and hotel around the next-day rule. You need at least one night in town, and it's worth leaving a spare day in case tickets sell out.
• Check your ticket at the window. Check your name, document number, date, route and time slot before you leave. Afterwards, the date and name cannot be changed, and the passport number can only be corrected once in the case of an obvious clerical error.
• Be on time. There is a 30-minute tolerance relative to the time on your ticket in regular season and 45 minutes in the busiest months; at the mountain checkpoints there is no tolerance.
• A guide is not mandatory, but it is recommended. Under article 17.1 of the regulations, as worded by RM 000334-2026-MC, the ticket and your ID are enough to enter, and going with a tour guide "is recommended".
• Don't forget the bus. The bus from Aguas Calientes to the llaqta entrance is paid separately.

Where do you buy Machu Picchu tickets in Aguas Calientes?

At the DDC Cusco ticket office in the Centro Cultural de Machupicchu Pueblo. It is the only in-person sales point in town.

How many tickets are sold in person each day?

Can I buy in Aguas Calientes and enter the same day?

According to the official protocol, yes, by POS, and also in cash. Bring soles in case the connection fails.

Do I have to go in person with my passport?

Yes. The purchase is personal and you need the original document, the same one you will show at the entrance.

Is hiring a guide mandatory?

No. Since RM 000334-2026-MC, the regulations only recommend it.

In short

The ticket office at the Centro Cultural de Machupicchu Pueblo is a real plan B: up to 1,000 tickets a day, for the next day, at the same price as online. But in high season you need to queue early, mountain quotas are tiny and most tickets are for Circuit 2. Bring your original ID, cash and a backup route, check the online counter before you head out, and confirm the hours in town, because the official sources don't match.
